Stop Motion Animation

Students will begin by learning more about the work of stop-motion artists and animators, as well as a brief introduction on the history of stop-motion and its different techniques.
Then you will discover some basic concepts of animation, the materials and tools necessary to make your first piece of animation and the software you will use.
Then it will be time to get down to your own personal interests and finish the course with a small piece related to your work.

Teacher

Marc Larré is a practicing artist and works as in-house tutor at Metàfora, where he also teaches Photography and Video edition.

Marc studied Fine Arts, first at the University of Barcelona and later at The Cooper Union in New York. He is now represented by the Barcelona based gallery Estrany de la Mota. Marc has recently won prizes such as Fundación BBVA 2015 (Video Art), Miquel Casablancas 2014 (runner-up), Barcelona, and BCN Producció 2013, Barcelona.

Classes

Each week we will work with a different technique exploring narratives and technical possibilities.

The classes will consist of theoretical input and practical exercises for the students to work on. At the end of each session there will be a come-together of all students (on-site and online) to review the work produced.

In the individual tutorials which accompany the classes on this course the students has the chance to discuss how the technique can be used to deepen his/her individual practice.

Materials

Workspace, etc:

A comfortable workspace, preferably with ample table-space.
An up-to-date web browser (we recommend Firefox or Chrome).
A previously installed free account on ZOOM, preferably desktop version.
Working webcam, microphone and headphones/speakers.
Strong Internet connection via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Students on this course will be given access to Metàfora’s educational platform Classlife and an @metafora.org email for increased internet security access to Drive and Hangouts inside Metàfora’s Google Education domain.

Course-specific materials:

A camera with the possibility of fast image transfer to a personal computer. This can also be a mobile phone with a quality camera.

In this special block, participants can choose to register for the online classes individually or in packages of 2 to 3 classes per week. Since most of the classes are being live streamed from Metàfora, there is also an option of having a studio space at Metàfora and joining the classes in person.

Metàfora’s student population is rich and diverse in age, previous fields of experience and level. Our students come from all over the world, and we are interested in candidates who contribute to the community through active participation in all our activities.

This batch of courses is open to continuing students and is free for anyone signed up for the following block on Metàfora’s Studio Art Programs.

As a stand-alone experience it is an opportunity for students who simply want to try us out for a few weeks before deciding on a longer commitment. Students have the option to sign up online from their home countries or to join us in person and have a studio on-site while taking this special short term stay for a very reduced fee.

All students have access to weekly individual tutorials with Metàfora’s staff of trained artists. The tutorials can be online or face-to-face.

Alumni are invited to join with an additional 10% discount.
