Becoming Objectified

Objects, our everyday things, and immediate surroundings have come under new speculation in the past 30 years. With branches of metaphysics such as Object-Oriented Ontology, we’ve come to realise that there are different forms of consciousness that are non-biological and non-anthropocentric.

Objects too have a soul, unlike our common accusations of them being ‘inanimate’ —from the Latin, in(not), animatus(life/soul). Moving beyond esoterics and even spirituality (or reinterpreting both), artists have helped us understand how objects and materials have a particular way of vibrating, breathing and moving around in their own agency.
