Summer Block in Studio Arts
1ST TO 25TH OF JULY, 2024
The Summer Block at Metàfora goes beyond the habitual tourist experience of Barcelona. In an oasis of art and creativity, students work and think, while embracing everything which the city has to offer.
With the help of our team of practicing artist and acclaimed international curators, students have the opportunity to think and reflect on their personal art production.
In addition, the Summer Block represents an exceptional opportunity for prospective students who do not have the chance to join us during the rest of the year. The program is as always full of classes in tools and techniques, and students are encouraged to experiment and try new ways of working.
Sun and art production
During the Summer the school is warm and welcoming. Students work in the studios (open 7 days a week, until midnight) and make the most of all Metàfora’s large and wonderful outdoor patios, where anyone can comfortably set up an easel or a work table.
CULTURAL VISITS
Students may find themselves drawing the city from some of Barcelona’s most beautiful view points, debating contemporary art vividly on the terrace of an art museum, visiting the studios of local artists or exploring secret corners of the city, hidden from the eyes of the habitual tourist.

The Summer Block starts with the introduction of a theme-based project. The idea behind this is to help the individual studio-practice of every student. Each theme-based project ends with a work review where students present the work produced. The theme of the Summer Block is “No Man’s land”.
The first week also offers the following classes:
A Group tutorial and two-day class on Contemporary Painting, a Body-Cast workshop and a Studio Visit.
Group tutorials: All students are assigned to a personal tutor who follows their individual process and work. The tutorials are held in small groups. All the tutors at Metàfora are experienced artists who are active on the local and international art scene.
The mornings from Monday to Thursday are dedicated to drawing sessions in different places of the city: The Gothic Area, the Finance district, the Gaudí park, the cemetery or the beach (Thursday of the second week is a Street Art tour). The idea is to take the students to both tourist sites and also non-tourist sites to discover Barcelona from a different perspective though the pencil, the charcoal or the ink-brush.
Students are welcome to work in the studios during the weekend.

The second week starts with extra tutorials and a session of Recent Art History. This latter is a weekly lecture and the idea behind these classes is to encourage students to build a personal discourse informed by what is happening today in Contemporary Art.
From Tuesday to Friday the Tools & Techniques during the second week will be:
Group tutorial and Life Drawing (weekly session), Screen Printing 1-2, Grafitti (practical workshop).
Just like week 1, the afternoons are for drawing in different places of the city.

During the third week it is usual to see how students are getting used to working in the studios at Metàfora.
Recent Art History and tutorials are held again on Monday.
The Tools & Techniques of the third week are:
Life Drawing (weekly session), Clay Sculpting 1-2 and Cyano Types (a photographic technique using sunlight).
As the previous weeks, our drawing teacher takes students around the city for drawing sessions on unusual sites.
Friday concludes with a social gathering, an international pot-luck, where all students bring food from thir home-countries.
As the last week is coming up and with it the final work presentations, students may need to work in the studios during the weekend.

The last week starts with a feeling of “normal” with Recent Art History and tutorials. Nevertheless students will usually be busy finishing up their projects for the last day.
To make the most of such a short week, we introduce another technique of Printmaking: Lino Cuts, during the last day of tools & techniques.
Wednesday and Thursday are dedicated to viewing and presenting the individual work of the students accompanied by the tutors of the Summer Block.
The last day ends with a glass of cava and goodbyes.

When the student has been admitted to the course, it is essential to pre enroll by paying the reservation fee. Metàfora does not guarantee the place without the payment of the reservation fee.
This payment will not be refunded under any circumstances.
For courses with a selection process, a letter of admission is required to pay for the reservation of the place. Upon being admitted, the participant will receive an invoice in which the amount and a payment term are specified. If this deadline is not met (and Metàfora does not receive notification of the delay in writing), the student may lose the place and go on to the waiting list.
For courses without entrance requirements the student can make the reservation of the space at the moment of registration.
If the student wishes to cancel or postpone their registration, said payment will remain valid for a maximum of 12 months, counting from the beginning of the course in which the student originally enrolled (see conditions below).
Tuition payment:
The remaining total tuition fee must be paid at least 15 days before the start of the course, 7 days before in case of courses without entry requirements.
If the student does not make the remaining payment within this period, they may lose their place in the course and go on to the waiting list. For bank transfers it is essential to send proof of payment to Metàfora within the deadline.
Once the course has started, there is no possibility of returning the enrollment (or part of it) if the student wishes to cancel or postpone his / her stay at Metàfora.
Defer the beginning of a course or change course:
If the student wishes to postpone his / her start in the course or change to another course, the amount paid for reservation of registration and registration remains valid for a maximum of 12 months counting from the beginning of the course in which the student originally enrolled .
During this period, the student may opt for other courses (subject to admission and availability of places). In the event that the price of the new course does not coincide with the course chosen initially, the student will pay the difference. If the chosen course has a lower value than the one paid, the remaining amount will be saved for another Metàfora activity, for a maximum of 12 additional months. In no case will the amount paid to date (or part of it) be returned.
To postpone the start of the course or change to another course, it is essential that the student inform Metàfora by written notification at least 6 weeks before the beginning of the course for which he / she originally enrolled. If this notification is made later than 6 weeks before the start of the course, 80% of the payment can be kept valid for 12 months. Notifications of this type are not accepted in the last 7 days before the start of the course (payment is lost).
Involuntary interruptions of studies:
In case of accident or illness during the course, studies may be interrupted for a maximum period of 12 months. It is essential to present a medical certificate in this regard. During this time the acquired economic commitment remains valid without any surcharge.
Voluntary interruptions of studies:
Once the course has started, there is no possibility of returning the tuition fee (or part of it) if the student wishes to cancel or postpone his / her stay at Metàfora.
In case a student decides to interrupt the studies voluntarily, he / she loses his place in the course and must comply with the acquired financial commitment. In no case will interrupting the course voluntarily leaves the student exempt from the financial commitments contracted.
If the student wishes to resume the studies in the future, he / she must restart the application and enrollment payment procedures again.
Payment Methods:
