Tools & Techniques

This class introduces the expressive possibilities of plaster and clay through basic mold-making and small-scale sculptural exercises. Students will work from objects they bring in and, once the technique is learned, are encouraged to develop personal projects outside class.

This workshop treats sound as a primary artistic material, shifting attention from the visual to listening, space, and experimentation. Students will explore ways of integrating sound into installation, video, performance, and sculpture, while learning basic tools for recording, editing, and playback.

This class explores installation as an artistic form and examines the elements that give it meaning and presence. Students will study its historical context, its role in contemporary art, and strategies for documenting and presenting installation work in a portfolio.

This course offers a foundation in figurative drawing through direct observation of the live model. Students will work on proportion, volume, light, and space while developing technical skills and a more attentive way of seeing the body.

Using Barcelona as a working field, this class introduces the city as both subject and studio. Through a lo-fi approach to photography and video, students will observe, move through, and respond to the urban environment.

An introductory course to clay and hand-built ceramics, designed for students to experiment with form through small-scale objects. With close guidance from the teacher, students will learn essential techniques and fire their final pieces off campus.

Common Activities

Mandatory first-year class. This introductory course offers a framework for understanding art since 1945 and situates contemporary artistic practice within its historical moment. Organized thematically rather than chronologically, it connects artistic production with social, political, and technological change.

Students meet in small groups of up to 8 students to deiscuss ideas, techniques and/or artistic interests, supervised by one of Metàfora’s professional artists.
The program has the privilege to count with a set of extremely skilled teachers and talented tutors, all cutting edge of Barcelona’s art scene.

ATELIER:

A supervised studio space where the whole group works simultaneously, creating a collective environment of experimentation, dialogue, and feedback. Students will develop their projects while learning how to present, discuss, and reflect on their work.

SCULPTURE LAB:

A space for developing sculptural works and installations through experimentation, prototyping, and making. Students work closely with the teacher to refine ideas, address technical and conceptual challenges, and develop the skills needed to bring projects into physical form.

A space for encounters with artists working across different practices, processes, and contexts. Through talks, presentations, and exchange, students will gain insight into how artistic work develops and circulates today.

Tools & Techniques

This hands-on workshop introduces the basics of arc welding through guided practice and safety instruction. Students will learn how to strike an arc, run a weld bead, and finish a joint, while developing a small sculptural piece in metal.

Students will work on large-scale paintings and drawings, individually and collectively, through experimental mark-making and a limited palette. The class encourages students to move beyond visual representation and explore abstraction as a direct, physical process.

This class explores the book as an artistic medium, from editions and visual narratives to experimental forms of publishing. Students will look at historical precedents and contemporary practices while developing their own printed or image-based publication projects.

This workshop deepens students’ experience with clay through wheel throwing and the possibilities of form, repetition, and refinement. Building on basic ceramic skills, the class encourages technical precision alongside personal exploration

This course explores mushrooms as a point of entry into ecology, material thinking, and interdependence. Thinking of fungi as companion species, students will explore themes such as multispecies collaboration, alternative notions of time, decay and regeneration, and the mycelium as a source of inspiration for imagining new ways of living, creating, and inhabiting the world.

A course focused on the transition beyond Metáfora, where students begin to refine how they write, present, and articulate their practice. It emphasizes preparation before visibility, rehearsal before exposure, and clarity before the next stage.

Tools & Techniques

A theoretical and practical exploration of installation through textiles and other soft materials. Students will experiment with site-specific forms, material symbolism, and sculptural drawing through hands-on work with fabric and related techniques.

This course explores performance through the body, from early precedents to contemporary practice. Working individually and in groups, students will develop actions and reenactments, culminating in a performance of their own.

This class focuses on figurative work through observation, composition, and material exploration. Students will develop their own approach to the body and the figure while strengthening technical and expressive skills.

This course examines collaboration as both a method and a way of working. Students will explore how artists develop projects with others, share authorship, and use collective processes to expand their practice.

An introduction to printmaking through linocut, drypoint, and silkscreen. Students will learn how images move from matrix to paper or other supports, creating editions that combine craft, precision, and experimentation.

This course combines theory and hands-on work to introduce students to wood construction and basic structural principles. Students will learn how to read plans, measure and cut materials, and build stable forms using appropriate tools and techniques.
